The Christmas Lights switch on 2020 were just a little different this year !!
Traditionally the lights are switched on during the ‘Dickens Event’ being the last Saturday in November, but owing to the Covid-19 Pandemic and in line with government guidelines the event could not take place this year.
But thanks to all the hard work by Atherstone Partnership and the talents of Cllr Gary Chamberlain and his son Tom, they put together a short film for the people of Atherstone to watch in the comfort and safety of their own homes.
It would have been the 35th Dickens Event and to celebrate that Santa came along all the way from the North Pole and met up (socially distanced of course) with Cllr Denise Clews the Town Council Mayor.
The switching on event was in memory of a very special lady that recently sadly passed away, Atherstone Town Councillor Lorna Dirveiks.
Lorna was a dedicated Town Councillor and former long serving North Warwickshire Borough Councillor who cared deeply about the local people and community of Atherstone.
We really hope you enjoy watching the film which anyone can watch on YouTube on the Stone Channel.
Next Saturday 5th December Santa will be making a live broadcast at 7pm.
Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and in light of the risks posed, the Annual Atherstone Remembrance Parade could not take place this year.
This was deeply disappointing for all who proudly take part year after year and it is not a step that has been taken lightly but in line with Government guidelines based on expert advice to protect the health and well-being of everyone who would have participated in the event.
We are however delighted to be able to share some photos and with you that were taken socially distanced courtesy of Graham Beale Photography and two videos kindly shared with us by the Stone Channel.
Our Mayor Cllr Denise Clews laid a wreath on behalf of the Town Council and Cllr Ray Jarvis as NWBC Deputy Mayor on behalf of North Warwickshire Borough Council, plus Craig Tracey MP and Karen Tracey, Rev Michael Brandsma the Vicar of St Marys Church, Eddie Stephenson on behalf of North Warwickshire First Responders, Cllr Gary Chamberlain Chairman of Atherstone Partnership (all whilst observing social distancing and Covid protocols) and we also had a wonderful Bugler.
